This news was aired by most of the local news programs last night. And after seeing the clip from the first episode of season 4 of Desperate Housewives, a scene in which Susan was told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause, she replied, “Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines” the reason for the common reaction among Filipinos.

Public display of plain stupidity? I’m not saying this only because I am a Filipino; I’m just being rational. The screenwriters and the actress, herself, have done a hurtful act that only shows their irrationality and idiocracy. Why include the actress? Because she has a choice not to say those words only if she knew and understand how discriminating those lines are.  And yet she failed to realize that.

This is not only instance that Filipinos were discriminated in US television. There’s this talk show host who said, “…if you are a Filipino, eat your dogs.” I admit that here in the Philippines, some people do eat dog meat. But the generalization done which is evident in the line is ignominious.

Another is an actor who said, “I have six Filipinas tied in my room,” and an entry in Oxford Dictionary on the word “filipina” which according to the book means “domestic helper.” [Filipina means a female citizen of Philippines].

Oh God, they took our nurses and doctors, leaving the hospitals in our country with a few of these professionals, to take care of them and this is how they thank us for that!

This act [done by ABC and the people behind the show] is purely an uneducated bigotry.

This attitude of some people towards Filipinos can be partially blamed to the scandals and social happenings in our country — the most proximate event to the racism by ABC is last year’s Nursing board exam scandal. Yet, that cannot be an excuse for ABC’s mistake.

It is “modest” [enough] for the Philippine government and the whole of the Filipino citizenry to demand a simple public apology. I really hope that they [ABC and the people behind Desperate Housewives] realize the wrong in their actions.

We [Filipinos] are of equal stature to anyone else in this world, simply because we are humans like Americans, like anyone else living in this world, created equal with the right not to be discriminated.
